Danebury aka “Dane”
In addition to his neurological challenges, Danebury also lives with suture line periostitis affecting his nasal frontal suture and extending to the lacrimal suture line. This condition requires thoughtful, ongoing management and careful monitoring—something LOHR is committed to providing throughout his life.
Despite these challenges, Danebury remains one of the sweetest horses on the farm. He seeks out affection, stands quietly for attention, and has an uncanny ability to make people feel instantly at ease. His gentle demeanor and soft presence have made him a fan favorite among volunteers, visitors, and program participants alike.
Danebury reminds us daily that a horse’s worth is not measured by soundness or statistics, but by heart. His calm acceptance, trust in people, and desire for connection speak volumes about his resilience and spirit.
From promising young athlete to cherished sanctuary ambassador, Danebury’s journey reflects the importance of responsible retirement, informed care, and lifelong compassion. He embodies the truth that even horses facing physical challenges still have so much love to give—and so much impact to make.
Sweet, steady, and endlessly kind—Danebury will always be our Great Dane. 🐎💙

Danebury is affectionately known at Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue as our “Great Dane”—not just for his size, but for his exceptionally gentle heart and cuddly, people-loving personality.
During his racing career, Danebury showed promise and professionalism, moving through respected Thoroughbred sales and working with experienced connections within the industry. Ultimately, his racing career came to an end after he developed wobblers syndrome, a neurological condition that affects coordination and balance. While this diagnosis made continued training and racing unsafe, it did not diminish who Danebury is at his core.
