Athena, registered as Woodville Woodville, is a New York–bred Thoroughbred whose life reflects both the fragility and strength of these remarkable athletes.

She came to Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue after surviving a severe bout of colic while pregnant—an ordeal that tragically resulted in the loss of her foal. Following that experience, Athena was retired from both breeding and racing, closing a demanding chapter of her life and beginning a new one rooted in safety and compassion.

Despite what she has endured, Athena remains gentle, affectionate, and deeply people-oriented. She loves children, stands patiently to be groomed, and finds comfort in quiet connection. She has even been ridden bareback around the farm, a reflection of her trust, calm nature, and emotional steadiness.

Athena’s story is also one of thoughtful stewardship. She was owned by Joe Applebaum, Past President of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, who made the compassionate decision to retire her and entrust her future to Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue. His leadership within the Thoroughbred industry and commitment to responsible aftercare ensured Athena would receive lifelong care rooted in dignity, safety, and respect.

Today, Athena lives as a cherished sanctuary resident—free from expectation, pressure, or performance. She reminds us that healing does not erase loss, but it does allow strength, softness, and trust to endure.

Athena’s journey embodies the heart of our mission: people helping horses heal people.
