Casper, registered as Livingston Appeal, is a Florida-bred Thoroughbred whose life was forever changed before it truly began.
In his very first race, Casper suffered a catastrophic slab fracture to his knee after striking the starting gate—an injury that immediately ended his racing career. What could have been the end of his story instead became the beginning of something far more meaningful. Casper found refuge at Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue, where his future shifted from uncertainty to safety, care, and compassion.
At LOHR, Casper received the time, patience, and medical support he needed to heal. But it was not only Casper who was recovering.
Shortly after his arrival, Casper formed a profound bond with Danielle, a young girl living with arthrogryposis who was navigating life after the traumatic double amputation of her feet and ankles. Both had endured sudden, life-altering injuries. Both were learning how to move forward in bodies that no longer worked the way they once had.
Together, Casper and Danielle found understanding, strength, and the will to carry on.
Their bond became a symbol of resilience and mutual healing—so powerful that they later presented together at Equine Affaire, where Danielle shared with spectators how Casper had saved her life. In her words, this horse—once broken at the starting gate—gave her hope when she needed it most.
Casper’s story reminds us that healing is not linear, and purpose does not end with injury. Through patience, connection, and trust, Casper became far more than a retired racehorse. He became a lifeline.
From a shattered beginning to a life of profound impact, Casper embodies the heart of our mission: people helping horses heal people—and horses helping people heal in return. 🐎
