Born in 1999 and registered as Tiger Tap, Spike is a handsome Thoroughbred gelding with a proud and accomplished past. During his racing career, he made sixteen starts, earning one first-place victory and two third-place finishes.
Following his time on the track, Spike transitioned into a second career in jumping, where he was thoughtfully trained and deeply loved by his devoted owner. When it became clear that continued jumping was placing strain on his joints and hooves, a compassionate decision was made to retire him — ensuring his long-term comfort above all else.
Spike found his way to Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue, where he quickly became a volunteer favorite.
Affectionate, playful, and endlessly curious, Spike thrives on interaction. He enjoys being part of whatever is happening in the barn and has always brought personality and warmth wherever he goes. Over the years, he has played an important role in our equine-assisted programs, offering quiet connection and comfort to many members of our community.
In 2024, Spike faced a significant challenge when he sustained a serious eye injury. With the guidance of our veterinary team, he underwent a successful enucleation procedure to preserve his comfort and quality of life. True to his resilient spirit, Spike adapted beautifully.
Today, Spike continues to live a happy and fulfilling life at sanctuary — grazing peacefully with his pasture mates and reminding us daily that resilience, dignity, and joy are not diminished by age or adversity.
